Chacaltaya - World's Highest Ski Resort

Chacaltaya is a mountain in Bolivia located just outside La Paz, Bolivia and is known to have the World's Highest Ski Resort.

At an elevation of 17,785 ft (5,421 meters) above sea level. The glacier on Chacaltaya served as Bolivia’s only ski resort. Due to the melting of the glacier, skiing has been limited.

The glacier on Chacaltaya was believed to be as old as 18,000 years old, but over the last 70 years the glacier melted down. With most of the meltdown coming after 1980, due to missing precipitation and the warm phase of El Nino, resulted in its final disappearance in 2009.

Though skiing is limited to when it receives fresh snow, it is still a great half-day trip to hike and see some amazing views. More information on Chacaltaya

Casa Nacional de la Moneda (National House of the Mint) is a huge building, now a museum, dates back to 1572 and is where the silver from Cerro Ricco was minted into coins. A strange statue of a grinning face hangs over the courtyard in the museum, which is kind of fitting for the greed of the Spaniards.
