Cotoca, BoliviaThe legend of the Virgen de Cotoca started in the mid-1700s when two men claimed they discovered a miraculous image of a woman in a tree trunk and called it the Virgin de Cotoca. In honor of this image they built a church and each year on December 8, there is a festival known as Fiesta de la Virgen de Cotoca. The festival draws thousand of Bolivians to the town for it and there are some that walk the 18 Km from the city of Santa Cruz to Cotoca hoping that in exchange for their efforts, she will bless them and answer their prayers. The main attraction here is the sacred church, just off of the main plaza. The church also features a statue of the Virgin of Cotoca. Also, in this town you can walk through the unique market or checkout the different shops of handcrafted items around the plaza. Other attractions close by are the Botanical Gardens, which is on the road to Cotoca, about 5 km from the city of Santa Cruz. You can also continue onward from this town to the Jesuit Missions tour. |
