Samaipata, Bolivia![]() The drive there is definitely worth it, you wind up and around the lush foothills of the Andean Mountains. The road there offers some amazing scenery, where you can stop along the road and view gorgeous sights or hike to see waterfalls. Nestled in foothills of the Bolivian Andes, the town is surrounded by gently rolling hills and forest-covered mountains, with many good hiking trails that run throughout the countryside and the beautiful Amboro National Park is nearby. This mountain town is a popular getaway for many people of Santa Cruz who want to escape the heat of the city. As well as a growing number of European residents have settled there permanently, setting up hotels, restaurants, cabins and tour agencies. The town is small and peaceful with numerous colonial buildings, restaurants and hotels. Many foreign tourists enjoy this charming town and they end up staying longer than they originally planned. Samaipata Attractions - Things to do![]() El Fuerte de Samaipata: The top attraction in Samaipata is the Inca ruins known as El Fuerte de Samaipata. It is located about 5 miles (8km) just outside Samaipata. The ruins are a huge stone hill carving on top of a mountain and is one of the largest archeological sites in Bolivia.

Getting ThereFrom Santa CruzBuses to Samaipata leave daily from the bus terminal usually around 4pm. There is also an express taxi near the bus terminal that goes directly to Samaipata. It costs about $15 (100 Bs) for the express taxi and that covers up to 4 people. The journey takes about 2 hours. You can also Rent a Vehicle to get there. From Cochabamba There is a bus that takes the old road between Santa Cruz and Cochabamba going both ways. The bus passes through Samaipata daily. From Sucre Hotels - Places to StayLa Posada del Sol: located on Calle Ezequiel Arteaga, hotel has clean rooms with your choice of private or shared baths. Room rates range from $10-$20 per night depending on the room type. Hotel features a spacious garden area, completely enclosed for privacy, balcony terraces with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Hotel also offers Spanish language classes taught by Rosario Castro de Wauson.El Pueblito Eco Resort: this is new unique hotel that is a small replica of a colonial town. The hotel offers beautiful views of the entire mountain valley. The colonial style houses are creatively decorated and the rooms are differentiated by themes, guests can choose to stay in "blacksmith shop", "the bookstore", "the flower shop" and many other themes. Average room rate is $25-$30 per night. Hotel Amboro: located near the plaza, it is one of the popular places to stay. Average room rate is $10-$15 per night. Hotel will make arrangements for adventure tours around the area. Places to Eat - Restaurants, Bars, & PubsMosquito Disco and Bar: They serve up pasta and soup. It is also a popular late night hangout in Samaipata, where you can eat, drink and dance. Look for the yellow Volkswagon mounted on the roof.Landhaus: located on the northern side of town. They serve up European style meals. There is also a disco here at night. Hamburg Cafe is a nice restaurant/bar. They serve pasta, chicken and vegetarian meals. They also offer internet access for travelers and do book-exchanges. Irlandais Bar: located on Plaza 26 de Noviembre, has a nice atmosphere and is run by Hotel Amboro.
