San Pedro Cave in Sorata, Bolivia

An excellent hike near the town of Sorata is to San Pedro Cave. Also known as Gruta de San Pedro, the hike takes about 2-3 hours from the town of Sorata and another 2-3 hours to hike back. The hike to the cave offers some great views over the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The cave was believed to be used by the Incas as a swimming hole and according to local legends the Incas buried a large amount of treasure deep inside the cave and flooded it to hide the treasure.

The San Pedro Cave is managed by the local community and is open from 8am-6pm and it cost 8 bolivianoes to enter. Locals have setup lights inside the cave and inside the cave there is a lagoon, and you can see fantastic green and blue colors when the lights are on. There are also paddle boats inside the cave that can be rented.

To reach the cave, you have to hike about 11km from Sorata to reach the village of San Pedro and there is a sign that directs you to the cave set at the bottom of a cliff. Alternatively, if you don't want to do that much hiking you could also take a taxi from Sorata and then hike back into town.
