"Travel Guide to Uyuni, Bolivia & Salar de Uyuni region"

The town of Uyuni is a dusty old town, that sits on the edge of the world's largest salt desert known as Salar de Uyuni. The main reason anyone comes to the desolate town of Uyuni is to travel to Salar de Uyuni and seeing many other natural wonders of the world that the region contains.

Uyuni is a town in southwestern part of Bolivia in the altiplano region, near the border of Chile and lies at an elevation of 3670 meter (12,040 feet) above sea level.

The town was founded in 1889 as a railway junction, you can still find evidence of that today where there is a "train cemetery" filled with old, rusting steam locomotives that are neat to explore and take photos.

The town of Uyuni itself has very few attraction for travelers. Today with a population of about 10,500, the town's primary function is as a gateway for tourists visiting the world's largest salt flats; Salar de Uyuni and many other natural wonders of the world in that region.

Around the main plaza in Uyuni there are many tour agencies that compete for the Salar de Uyuni tour. You'll probably have tour agencies ask you if you want to go on the tour as soon as you get there.

When choosing a tour company, you must first decide what you want to see and how long you want to stay. Also, decide if you need the guide to speak English. Tours runs anywhere from $60-$120 per person, depending on how long you want to stay and what you visit. The standard tour is 3 days. But, you can find tours that range from 1 day to 6 day tours.
