The easiest way to get around a city in Bolivia is by taxi. Taxi cabs can be found anywhere at any time in almost any city or town in Bolivia and offer a cheap and safe way to get around.

Most taxis in Bolivia are not equipped with meters and in many cities and towns there is a standard rate to go to a particular destination. Before you get into a cab, it is advisable to ask a local or in a hotel, what the rate should be for the destination you wish to reach.

A quick trip within a city center will rarely cost no more than 7-14Bs ($1-$2), though, there might be the occasional taxi driver that might overcharge a tourists, it is best to ask the price or agree on the fare before you get in.

Outside bus terminals, train stations and larger hotels, cab drivers will most likely quote you inflated fares, particularly if you appear to be a newly arrived tourist. In these, cases walk down the street a few blocks before hailing a taxi.

You can also hire taxis by the day or half-day to go sightseeing around the city. Which can save you time from waiting around for a micro or even money if you are traveling in a group and splitting the cost.

Taxis can also be chartered for longer distances if you want to visit a place near major cities. For example you may be able to find a taxi in Sucre be willing to take you and your group for a quick day trip to Potosi.

In Bolivia you will never be at a loss for a taxi. Just about anyone can turn their car into a taxi by putting a sign in the window. You can find two types of taxis in Bolivia. Ones that are privately owned and others that are owned by taxi companies called radio-taxis.

The privately owned taxis are vehicles of any type, driven by their owners, that may or may not be clearly marked. Typically they place a small placard on their front windshield and drive around the city picking up passengers.

The most reliable taxi companies are called radio-taxis or radiomóviles’ and display brightly lit signs with their telephone numbers on top of their cab. Tourists should look for radio-taxis just to be on the safe side.
